class discussion on 10\30

I enjoyed yesterdays class as well. I liked the format of our teaching day as well. Everyone's contributions were helpful and beneficial for the entire class (especially Abe's presentation on the Amazon book downloader).... it's technology which could potentially revolutionize learning and reading.

In regards to some of the web-sites we were discussing (Juicycampus.com) I am kind of disgusted that we're in college and we have a web-site devoted to cruel gossip, as well as surprised that our school would allow this to go on. Our blogs are completely unrelated to websites like juicycampus.com and others like it. Our blogs are an intellectual outlet where we can express academic interests and concerns, not personal attacks on people, just for the sake of doing it. Does this seem like middle school to anyone else besides me?I'm sure it's a source of entertainment for some-but such a public display seems wrong.

I fully agree that juicy campus and our HWS blogs are two VERY different things. I think it is pathetic that our school has ties with this site. It gives the colleges a high school atmosphere where people personally attack each other in order to attain laughs for the site visitors and embarrassment for the victims. This does seem like middle school!

Abe, I completely agree - I was talking to one of my friends about the juicycampus site and she hadn't known about it before hand and was horrified at our schools participation as well. Why, as college students do we need to be so vindictive, aren't we mature enough to deal with this differently? Aren't we more intellectual and better than this? Another friend had a different reaction-saying it was hilarious and got great entertainment out of it. Yes, there are somethings that are pretty ridiculous and couldn't be feasible but wouldn't you have a different reaction if you saw your name on the blog? Jen is right in the regards it is cyber bullying at a college level yet I agree with Cory that who ever wastes their time posting malicious things is something you can't take too seriously.
